Further information

"Palaces for workers!" was the rallying cry when the GDR realised this new district on the ruins of war in the early 1950s. Marx and Schinkel were the godfathers. Socialist classicism. And they became palaces for the workers! Hygienic, luxurious, socially mixed and monumental. In the second construction phase between Strausberger Platz and Alexanderplatz, you can experience magnificent examples of the so-called late modernism of the GDR. It doesn't get more modern and international in construction and style. Get to know Richard Paulick, Josef Kaiser or Hermann Henselmann; great architects who unjustly do not have a similar status to Western star architects of the time. We will also include the Hansaviertel, the West's answer to the Stalinallee, in our narrative. Where the planners of the Stalinallee looked back historically, the West had the most famous architects of modernity. We can warmly recommend the Hansaviertel tour as a conclusive addition. After these tours you will understand why these two quarters, these "two sides of the same coin", will soon be UNESCO World Heritage Sites...
