Further information

In 1961 one of the defining moments in world history took place. At 1am on a quiet Sunday morning thousands of East German soldiers erected the Berlin Wall, dividing the city into the capitalist West and the communist East. On this walking tour we’ll take a look at the Germany that doesn’t exist anymore, the communist German Democratic Republic.

Discover how the oppressive secret police, the Stasi, pulled the strings of the state by encouraging citizens to spy on one another. Hear tragic tales of murder at the Berlin Wall Memorial and learn how East Germans escaped under the “Death Strip” by digging the infamous Tunnel 57.

Discover what daily life was really like in the East, and discuss how modern day Germany deals with its past today.
